Product Overview
Model and Positioning: The PDP403 is a high-performance Distributed Processing Unit (DPU) launched by Metso Automation. It is based on the Windows CE.net real-time operating system and specifically designed for the maxDNA distributed control system. Its core functions include real-time data acquisition, control logic execution, and Sequence of Events recording (SOE).
Core Differences: Compared with the PDP401, the PDP403 comes standard with a redundant backup cable (Metso #050292), simplifying the requirements for redundant configuration.

Hardware Architecture
Processor and Memory
- Control Processor: Adopts a Pentium-class CPU, paired with a dedicated microcontroller to handle high-speed I/O scanning.
- Storage: Built-in 64 MB CompactFlash (non-volatile storage) + 128 MB DRAM (runtime memory).
I/O Interfaces
- Local I/O Bus: Connects to Model IOP modules via a Motorola 68332 32-bit I/O processor and FPGA, with a single bus supporting up to 60 I/O modules.
- Remote I/O Expansion: Supports fiber optic repeater links with a maximum length of 2000 meters, suitable for long-distance signal acquisition.
Communication Interfaces
- Dual Ethernet Ports: RJ-45 interfaces, supporting 10/100Base-T, configurable in full-duplex or auto-negotiation mode.
- Backup Port: A dedicated 100Mbps Ethernet interface (via custom cable #050292) for data synchronization and status monitoring between redundant DPUs.
Optional Interfaces:
- Serial Port: RS-232 level, used for connecting external devices such as PLCs.
- IRIG-B Interface: Only available in higher models (e.g., PDP406/408); not included in PDP403.

Software Features
Fully Self-Describing Database
- All configuration information (tag names, alarm limits, algorithm parameters, etc.) is stored in the DPU memory to ensure configuration consistency.
- Supports graphical tools (such as maxDNA) for strategy management and visual debugging.
Software Backplane Protocol (SPB)
- Systems compatible with the SPB protocol can realize transparent data transmission across devices and support subscription-based updates to optimize bandwidth.
Multitask Scheduling
- Supports three-level processing cycles: fast tasks (10ms) to slow tasks (0.5 seconds), meeting different response requirements.
Installation and Deployment
Physical Installation
- Location Requirements: Must be installed in the leftmost slot of the maxPAC rack to optimize cooling airflow.
- Redundant Configuration: The backup DPU is vertically installed below the main DPU and connected via the standard backup cable (Metso #050292).
Power Supply and Environment
- Operating Temperature: 0°C to 60°C; Storage Temperature: -25°C to 70°C.
- Power Supply: 24Vdc ±4Vdc, power consumption is approximately 7W (standby state).
Startup Process
- First Startup: Initialize the CompactFlash through the DPU4FSetup tool, and configure the IP address and redundancy mode (StandAlone/Backup).
- Cold Start Mode: Set the mode switch to "B" to clear the old configuration, and restore it to "F" (normal operation mode) after completion.
