Hydran M2‑X Mark III is a new-generation online monitoring device for dissolved gas and moisture in transformer oil, launched by GE Grid Solutions. Building on over 40 years of proven DGA online monitoring technology, it provides continuous, reliable and low-maintenance condition monitoring for utility and industrial transformers.
As a comprehensive upgrade from the classic Hydran series, this device features long-life sensors, no moving parts, compact size, high scalability and optional explosion-proofing. It can detect insulation oil degradation and potential faults in real time. Overload, overheating, discharge and other faults in the transformer insulation system cause oil/paper degradation, generating dissolved gases and moisture, accelerating aging and potentially leading to catastrophic failure. This device effectively reduces the risk of unplanned outages, extends sensor service life and optimizes asset operation and maintenance efficiency.

Compatible with various insulating media including mineral oil, natural ester and synthetic ester, the unit enables simultaneous multi-parameter monitoring of gas composition, moisture-in-oil, oil temperature and load current. It supports IEEE hot-spot model calculation and seamlessly integrates with GE Perception™, Predix, SCADA and third-party APM platforms, providing critical data support for transformer fleet management, condition-based maintenance and fault early warning.

In addition, a UL-certified hazardous area version (M2‑X‑HZ) is available, suitable for Class I, Division 2 hazardous locations where flammable gases, vapors or liquids are unlikely under normal operating conditions but still pose potential safety risks. It serves as a core online monitoring terminal for the full-lifecycle health management of transformers.

FAQ

Q1: What are the core differences between M2‑X Mark III and the standard Hydran M2?A: Mark III is an enhanced version with longer sensor life, better algorithms, stronger scalability, and support for ester-based insulating fluids. It is compatible with the IEEE hot-spot model, offers more comprehensive communication protocols, and comes with a 7-year warranty. It is especially suitable for long-term unattended substations.
Q2: Does it support transformers using natural ester or synthetic ester oil?A: Yes. O1 (natural ester) and O2 (synthetic ester) models are available, fully covering monitoring requirements for new eco-friendly insulating fluids.
Q3: Does installation require transformer outage?A: In most cases, it can be directly connected to existing 1.5” or larger valves without oil drainage or power outage, enabling fast on-site deployment.
Q4: How long is the actual sensor life, and does it require frequent replacement?A: Accelerated aging tests show a mean time to failure of approximately 11.5 years, with real-world service life exceeding 10 years. Backed by a 7-year warranty, it provides long-term maintenance-free operation after installation.
Q5: How to integrate with existing monitoring systems or SCADA?A: Modbus and DNP3.0 are standard; IEC 61850 is optional. It supports RS‑485, Ethernet, fiber optics and other interfaces for plug-and-play connection to substation or dispatching systems.
Q6: Can it monitor oil temperature, load current and hot-spot temperature?A: External magnetic oil temperature sensors and split-core CTs can be connected. The built-in IEEE model automatically calculates winding hot-spot temperature for a more comprehensive assessment of thermal degradation of insulation.
Q7: How are alarm logic settings configured to avoid false alarms?A: High and high-high thresholds are supported. Gas alarms can be triggered by hourly or daily rate of change, and moisture alarms by average value. Multiple criteria greatly reduce false triggers caused by interference.
Q8: Is an explosion-proof version available, and for which applications?A: Yes, the M2‑X‑HZ (UL-certified) version is suitable for Class I, Division 2 hazardous areas — transformer locations where flammable gases or vapors are unlikely under normal operating conditions but still present potential safety risks.
Q9: Can moisture be displayed in both % RH and ppm?A: Yes, the unit supports dual-unit display of moisture-in-oil in % RH and ppm to meet different operation and maintenance standards.
Q10: What are the two sensor options?A: You can choose either the Hydran composite gas sensor (H₂, CO, C₂H₂, C₂H₄) or a single-component hydrogen (H₂) sensor, based on project requirements.
