The TRICONEX AO3481 Analog Output Module is one of the core I/O modules in the Tricon system family. Specifically designed for low-point count and distributed I/O application scenarios, it adopts a triple modular redundant (TMR) architecture and is tailored for safety-critical industrial control scenarios. With its independent channel design, redundant voting mechanism, and flexible base compatibility, the module ensures the stability and safety of output signals. It also supports hot standby redundancy and online maintenance, meeting the stringent requirements for continuous operation and rapid fault response in industrial environments.

Core Architecture & Working Principle

The AO3481 module adopts a triple modular redundant (TMR) isolated electronic channel design, where each channel independently receives data from the corresponding Main Processor (MP) Module. The module incorporates built-in voter circuitry; after performing voting on the input data from the three channels, it selects a single channel to drive the output and implements shunt processing on the other non-driven channels to prevent them from interfering with the output signal. This hardware-level design ensures output accuracy and reliability. In TMR mode, the data voting adopts median selection logic; if the system is configured in dual mode, it uses average value voting logic, guaranteeing signal stability across different operating modes.
The module supports full continuous channel-level diagnostic functionality, utilizing Forced-switch Diagnostic (FSD) to monitor the operating status of each channel in real time. When a fault is detected in any channel via diagnostics, the fault indicator on the front panel of the module lights up immediately and triggers a system alarm. However, the fault is confined to the single affected channel. The module as a whole can still operate normally under single-fault conditions and maintain effective operation even in certain multi-fault scenarios, ensuring uninterrupted control processes.

  2. Model 2483 Analog Output HART Baseplate Kit: Supports communication between HART field devices and PC-based configuration and asset management software, applicable to scenarios requiring device condition monitoring and parameter configuration
  3. Model 2483A Analog Output HART Hazardous Location Baseplate Kit (ATEX Certified): Specifically designed for hazardous environments, supports HART communication, and meets the operational requirements of hazardous areas such as Zone 2 and Group IIB
  4. DO External Termination Baseplate: Must be used with the Model 9863-610 External Termination Panel, suitable for analog output applications in hazardous areas (Note: "DO" is an official designation and not a typo)
The module adopts a mechanical keying design, which can effectively prevent incorrect installation on unconfigured baseplates and ensure the accuracy of system installation. Meanwhile, the module supports hot standby functionality, allowing online replacement of faulty modules without interrupting system operation, which improves the maintainability and continuous operation capability of the system.

System Integration & Supporting Components

Within the Trident system architecture, the AO3481 module communicates with the Main Processor (MP) Module via the TMR HDLC I/O bus, which features a transmission rate of 2 Mbps to ensure real-time data transmission. The logic power supply of the module is provided by the MP baseplate, eliminating the need for additional logic power configuration and simplifying system wiring and power supply design.
As a standard Trident product, the AO3481 module is available as part of the Model 5381 Analog Output TriPak Kit. This kit includes one AO3481 module and one Model 2481 baseplate kit, facilitating rapid deployment by users. In addition, the module must be used with essential accessories of the Trident system, including end caps, terminal covers and slot covers, to prevent damage to the module and baseplate caused by dust, liquids and corrosive gases.
