GE Multilin UR6DH DIGITAL I/O MODULE | UR 6DH

Overview

The GE Multilin UR6DH Digital I/O Module is a high-density digital input and output expansion card within the UR Universal Relay series. The UR6DH expands discrete signal acquisition and contact output channels for protection and control devices. It is designed for substation automation and power protection interlock circuits, exchanging signals via the high-speed UR backplane bus.

Equipped exclusively with Form-C contact outputs, the UR6DH is ideal for status monitoring, alarm triggering and blocking control for general digital applications. Logic configuration and channel parameter setup are completed through the EnerVista UR software. Hot-swap capability allows module maintenance without shutting down the whole unit, making it a widely selected option for I/O channel expansion of UR series protection relays.

Function Description

The UR6DH collects passive status signals from field auxiliary contacts, disconnectors and circuit breaker positions. Collected signals are sent to the UR mainframe logic engine for protection criteria processing. Output contacts drive alarm indicators, blocking relays and auxiliary circuit switches.

Onboard LED channel indicators simplify on-site troubleshooting for broken wiring and circuit faults. All channels can be assigned SOE event tags in software to record precise status change timestamps. The UR6DH has no independent processing chip; all logic calculations run on the UR CPU module installed in the same rack.

Key Features

  • High-density 32-point I/O integration: 16 DI + 16 DO per module
  • Full-channel galvanic isolation to reduce interference to protection systems
  • Hot-swappable; replacement without powering down the relay
  • Individual channel enable/disable; single-channel fault will not affect other channels
  • Status changes recorded in SOE sequence for fault playback
  • Pluggable terminals for faster wiring and rewiring
  • Compliant with IEC 61850; status changes uploaded to SCADA host
  • Conformal coating withstands temperature fluctuation, dust and humidity in substations

Product Characteristics

  • All outputs are Form-C transfer contacts; no Form-A high-speed trip outputs
  • Current-limited input circuits for standard DC signal loops
  • UR proprietary high-speed backplane bus with stable low latency
  • Channel LEDs display input status and output contact state in real time
  • Built-in hardware self-diagnosis; module failure alarms reported to backplane
  • Debounce delay configurable per channel to filter contact chatter
  • Module identification automatically reported to CPU; EnerVista auto-detects model and channel list

Advantages

  • Abundant I/O points in one module to save rack slots
  • Universal Form-C contacts compatible with most auxiliary control circuits
  • Hot-swap design cuts maintenance downtime
  • High-precision timestamping for protection interlocks and breaker position supervision
  • Flexible configuration; channel mapping and logic equations modified by software only
  • Wide compatibility: works with B30, C60, D60, G60, T60 and other UR relays
  • Channel isolation prevents external circuit faults from spreading to the main protection loop

Applications

  • I/O expansion for bay-level protection and control cubicles in substations
  • Auxiliary signal expansion for generator and transformer protection relays
  • External blocking and position acquisition for bus protection and line protection
  • Circuit breaker and disconnector status monitoring in medium-voltage switchgear
  • Power system alarm output and annunciator light driving
  • Interlock logic expansion for auxiliary equipment in power plants
  • Digital point extension for distribution automation feeder terminals

Purposes

  • Collect position signals from primary equipment auxiliary contacts
  • Output blocking contacts for protection interlocking
  • Drive local alarm indicators and alarm relays
  • Generate SOE events to record switch operation sequence
  • Expand UR relay I/O capacity for additional interlock logic
  • Interface with DC remote signalling loops and upload status changes to supervision system

Comparison with Other UR I/O Modules

  • UR6DH: 16DI 16DO, all Form-C. Best for general remote signalling and control expansion, NOT for high-speed direct tripping
  • UR6TH: 4DI 6DO with Form-A high-speed outputs. Preferred for direct trip circuits
  • UR6RH: 8DI 8DO, lower point count. For minor I/O supplement with lower cost
  • UR6AH: 8DI with mixed Form-A + Form-C outputs for both tripping and regular control

The UR6DH delivers the highest I/O density. It maximises expansion capacity within limited rack space but lacks fast trip contacts. Use UR modules with Form-A outputs for trip loops.

Compatible Accessories

  • CPU Modules: UR 9E, UR 9G, UR 9H
  • Power Supply Modules: UR PS4, UR PS5
  • Communication Modules: UR CMM, UR FOM
  • Main Relays: C60, D60, G60, T60, B30
  • Configuration Software: EnerVista UR Setup
  • Backplane Racks: UR standard 19-inch rack, UR half-size vertical rack

FAQ

Q: Can the UR6DH be used directly for protection trip outputs?

A: All UR6DH outputs are standard Form-C transfer contacts without high-speed trip capability. Primary protection trip outputs should use modules with Form-A trip contacts such as the UR6TH.

Q: Can I hot-swap the UR6DH in a live UR chassis?

A: Hot-swap is supported when rack power supply and CPU firmware versions are compatible. It is recommended to mask module channels in software before removal and installation to avoid unintended operation.

Q: Can mixed hardware revisions of UR6DH be installed in one UR device?

A: Mixed installation is hardware-compatible with identical channel functions. Confirm the CPU firmware is up-to-date to avoid recognition issues.

Q: Can UR6DH digital inputs accept 220VAC signals?

A: Digital inputs are rated for 24VDC only. 220V AC remote signals require intermediate relay conversion.

Q: What is the maximum number of UR6DH modules per UR relay?

A: The limit depends on available rack slots and total CPU I/O resources. Capacity varies for B30, C60, D60 and other models. Refer to the hardware manual for calculation.

Q: Does the UR6DH require independent firmware flashing?

A: The UR6DH has no standalone firmware. Module recognition, logic and channel processing are managed by the UR CPU firmware. Only the CPU needs firmware upgrades.

Q: How to choose between UR6DH and UR6RH?

A: Select UR6DH for high I/O point demand and balanced remote I/O expansion. Choose UR6RH for low point requirements and budget-limited minor auxiliary signal expansion.

Q: Can UR6DH status changes be uploaded to SCADA via IEC 61850?

A: Yes. Complete channel modelling and data set configuration in EnerVista UR Setup. Status updates are transmitted to the supervision system via MMS messages.
