HE700GEN200 is a uGENI series dual-channel VME interface module jointly launched by Horner APG and GE Fanuc. Designed for the GE Genius bus protocol, it enables bidirectional data exchange between VME backplane systems and Genius distributed I/O networks. Capable of replacing or operating in parallel with GE’s original GBC bus controller, it serves as the core communication conversion hardware for VME-based industrial control systems interfacing with the Genius fieldbus.

This module is a single-slot standard VME board, natively compatible with GE Series 90-70 and Mark VI/VIe turbine control platforms. It supports two independent Genius bus links, with each bus accommodating up to 32 field devices. All parameters can be custom-configured via the on-board DIP switch. It is widely deployed in power turbine systems and large-scale industrial control distributed signal acquisition applications.

Model Code Breakdown

HE700GEN200 Full Model Segmentation Definition:HE: Product prefix identifier for Horner APG700: Product line category for uGENI VME interface modulesGEN: Hardware identifier dedicated to the Genius bus protocol200: Dual-channel Genius interface version; the HE700GEN100 within the same series is the single-channel variant

Technical Features

  • Two independent Genius communication channels with fully isolated bus operation without mutual interference
  • Standard single-slot VME64 bus form factor, compatible with general VME racks and supporting custom VME interrupt priority configuration
  • Three selectable bus baud rates: 38.4K, 76.8K, 153.6K (Standard / Extended Mode)
  • 6 sets of on-board DIP switches covering full configuration items: bus address, interrupt, I/O address, memory base address and user mode
  • Dual address mapping partitions: short I/O address space plus standard large memory, which separately store messages, status tables and command buffers for the two Genius buses
  • Hardware-level bus status diagnosis; capable of reading four types of real-time status bits: link connectivity, communication health, interrupt and reset status
  • Power-up output enable configurable via DIP switch; two modes available: automatic output upon power-up or output interlock after power-on
  • Interrupt vectors assigned bound to I/O base addresses; interrupt levels selectable from Level 1 to Level 7, with Level 7 as the non-maskable highest priority
  • Daisy-chain wiring supported for bus topology; 120Ω terminating resistors fitted at both bus ends to suppress signal reflection
  • Complete dual memory partitions; independent request queues, I/O data tables and transmit/receive message buffers allocated to each channel

Product Characteristics

  • Compatibility: Can replace the GBC bus controller standalone, or operate in redundant parallel with original GBC controllers; compatible with all Genius I/O slave stations and handheld monitoring units
  • Flexible networking: Maximum 32 nodes per single bus channel; bus address configurable from 0 to 31. Address 31 serves as the default main controller, address 30 for redundant backup, and address 0 reserved for handheld monitors
  • Address resources: Short I/O base address configurable in segments ranging from 1000H to 5000H; uGENI memory base address adjustable within 000000H ~ 100000H
  • Two operation modes: User Mode / Super User Mode, adapting to different AM addressing coding rules of VME CPUs
  • Fault isolation: Failure on one bus channel will not disrupt communication on the other channel; hardware status bits are reported to the VME master controller in real time
  • Standardized wiring: 4 terminal positions on the front panel (Serial1, Serial2, Shield In, Shield Out) with segmented grounding design for shielding layers

Operating Principle

At the core of the HE700GEN200 are two independent uGENI protocol conversion chips, which implement protocol conversion between the parallel VME bus and the serial twisted-pair Genius bus. The VME master controller sends configuration commands and retrieves diagnostic status via short I/O addresses. Large standard memory partitions buffer all I/O points, control messages and fault information of the two bus channels. The board integrates an on-board hardware interrupt controller. When a bus fault occurs or data reception is completed, it transmits interrupt signals of corresponding priority levels to the VME backplane to prompt the master controller to process events.
The two Genius channels feature physical isolation with independent addressing and dedicated buffers, without occupying each other’s bus resources. Via daisy-chain wiring, each bus collects discrete and analog signals from up to 32 field slave stations, packages the data and uploads it to the VME memory partitions. Meanwhile, output commands from the master controller are distributed to field actuators to realize distributed real-time control.

Comparison Within HE700GEN Series

HE700GEN100Single Genius channel supporting only one bus link. Suitable for small-scale point systems with lower cost. It lacks a second independent memory partition and does not support dual-bus redundancy.
HE700GEN200Dual Genius channels equipped with separate hardware and dedicated buffers for each channel. Supports dual-bus redundancy and two independent field networks. Ideal for large multi-loop control systems and is the mainstream choice for power turbine applications.

Hardware Differences

  • HE700GEN100 only uses Switch2 for single-channel configuration;
  • HE700GEN200 requires configuration of both Switch2 and Switch3 for dual-channel parameters.
  • The memory partition capacity of HE700GEN200 is doubled, enabling connection of twice the number of I/O points.

Application Scenario Guidance

  • Select HE700GEN100 for total I/O points ≤ 160;
  • Select HE700GEN200 when dual independent field buses, redundant control are required or total I/O points exceed 300.

FAQ

Q1: What are the core differences between HE700GEN200 and HE700GEN100?
A1: HE700GEN200 is a dual-channel Genius bus module capable of running two independent field networks simultaneously and supporting redundant networking. HE700GEN100 is single-channel, supporting only one bus link with lower I/O capacity.
Q2: What is the maximum number of field devices on a single Genius bus, and how are addresses assigned?
A2: Up to 32 devices per bus with addresses ranging from 0 to 31. Address 31 is designated as the primary controller, address 30 for redundant backup controller, and address 0 is reserved for the handheld monitor.
Q3: Is a 120Ω terminating resistor mandatory?
A3: 120Ω resistors must be used if the cable characteristic impedance is unknown. If cable impedance is known, matching resistors can be adopted. Terminating resistors shall be fitted at both ends of the bus.
Q4: What fault causes the module to stay in reset state while the Communications Ok status bit remains permanently high?
A4: Possible causes include short-circuit on Genius bus wiring, missing terminating resistors, or bus address conflict. Troubleshoot terminal wiring, verify bus address set via DIP switches, and install matched terminating resistors.
Q5: How to resolve VME interrupt failure where the master cannot receive bus event signals?
A5: Ensure the interrupt level set on Switch1 matches the interrupt acknowledge level on Switch4. Confirm the module is installed in a VME interrupt chain slot. Interrupt function will be disabled if all relevant DIP switches are turned off.
Q6: Can this module directly replace the original GBC bus controller?
A6: Yes. It can fully replace the GBC for standalone networking, or operate in parallel with GBC to achieve bus redundancy while maintaining the same bus address specifications.
Q7: How many bus baud rates does the module support, and how to switch between them?
A7: Three baud rates are available: 38.4K, 76.8K, 153.6K (Standard / Extended Mode). Switch via Bit 6 of Switch2 / Switch3.
Q8: Is HE700GEN200 compulsory if existing Genius I/O slave stations are retained during system upgrade?
A8: HE700GEN100 is applicable for small-point single-bus applications. HE700GEN200 is recommended for dual field loops, redundant control and critical power turbine systems.
