HONEYWELL FC-SDIL-1608 is a safety loop monitoring digital input module with ground fault monitoring. It has 16 channels, which can be used to process proximity switch status signals or loop monitoring loop signals that comply with the DIN 19234 (NAMUR) standard. Meanwhile, it supports monitoring of ground faults occurring in these 16 loops. This module complies with the IEC 61508 standard and can be applied to safety integrity level scenarios up to SIL 3.

Digital Input Channels: Equipped with 16 loop-monitoring digital input channels, which can efficiently process proximity switch status signals compliant with DIN 19234 (NAMUR) standard or loop monitoring loop signals, meeting the connection needs of various devices.
Ground Fault Monitoring: Capable of monitoring ground faults in 16 loops to ensure the safety and stability of system operation. To realize this function, it is necessary to ensure that the z28 pin of the module has a ground connection and that the monitoring software is activated. It uses floating field sensors to check and indicate the connection status between 2×16 input wires and the ground; in zener barrier applications, it checks whether the connection between the module's "8Vdc" and the ground is disconnected.
SIL Certification: Complies with the IEC 61508 standard and is suitable for safety integrity level scenarios up to SIL 3. In industrial production with extremely high safety requirements, it can effectively reduce risks and prevent accidents.
Power Supply Mode: The connected field devices are powered by an on-board DC/DC converter, which is shared by 16 channels.
Signal Conversion Requirements: When a proximity switch signal is input to the SDIL-1608 module, level conversion is required to adapt to the module. At this time, a signal conversion module BN-1608 or BSN-1608 must be installed on the programming connector (Px) of the IO backplane inside the IO chassis.
The self-test operation of the module is performed by the SM controller, covering the following inspections:
- Functional testing of various trip levels to ensure the accuracy of the trip function under different working conditions.
- Conducting channel independence checks to ensure that each channel works independently without interference.
- Real-time monitoring of the supply voltage of input devices to avoid equipment operation issues caused by abnormal voltage.
- Checking the grounding connection to ensure the normal operation of the grounding system and protect equipment and personnel safety.
- Monitoring the used supply voltage to maintain stable system operation.
Depending on the selected signal converter, the SDIL-1608 channels can connect to various types of field devices:
Using BN-1608 converter: Can connect dry contacts with line monitoring function, dry contacts without line monitoring function (requires a line terminator with 10KΩ resistor and 1KΩ resistor (10%, 0.25W)), and proximity switches compliant with DIN 19234 (NAMUR) (e.g., Pepperl+Fuchs (P+F) N series).
Using BSN-1608 converter: Can connect dry contacts with line monitoring function, Pepperl+Fuchs (P+F) SN series safety proximity switches (with ferrous metal detection), and Pepperl+Fuchs (P+F) S1N series safety proximity switches (without ferrous metal detection). However, when using BSN-1608 to connect dry contacts without line monitoring function, the maximum number of channels that each BSN-1608 can connect may be limited. Moreover, the combination of the safety sensor and the safety input module SDIL-1608 meets the safety integrity requirements in IEC 61508.
There are multiple LED indicators on the front of the module to clearly indicate the status of channels, loops, and the module:
Two LEDs per channel:
- Green channel LED: Lights up when the channel status is high and turns off when it is low.
- Red channel LED: Lights up when a channel fault occurs or a wire break/short circuit is detected; turns off if no channel fault is detected after the last fault reset. For inputs with unactivated line monitoring, these two LEDs remain off at all times.
Bi-color ground LED: Shows green when the ground connection test is normal, red when abnormal, and turns off if the function is disabled.
Bi-color status LED: Shows green when the module is operating normally, and red when a fault occurs or it is not running. The green and red channel LEDs show different states under different field conditions. For example, in normal state, the green channel LED displays according to specific conditions, and the red channel LED turns off when no fault is detected; in case of wire break, the green channel LED turns off and the red channel LED lights up; in case of short circuit, both the green and red channel LEDs light up.
The SDIL-1608 module complies with the FM 3611 standard and can be used in hazardous areas, such as Class I, Division 2, Groups ABCD; Class II, Division 2, Groups FG. Among them, non-energized field devices can be placed in Division 2, while the module, FTA, and converter must be installed in non-hazardous areas. For detailed information, refer to the FM Approval Guide EP-SM.6287.
