Woodward 8200-226 Servo Position Controller (SPC) is an upgraded replacement for the 8200-224/225 models. It is a high-precision servo valve drive and closed-loop position control unit designed for industrial power and process control applications. It supports precise positioning of hydraulic and pneumatic actuators, is compatible with DeviceNet and 4–20 mA dual position command inputs, and accommodates single/dual position feedback. The unit features comprehensive fault diagnostics, and holds explosion-proof and marine classification society certifications. It is widely used for servo actuator control in gas turbines, steam turbines, engines, and industrial processes, meeting the stringent operating requirements of hazardous areas and marine applications.

Positioning & Functional Overview
Core Function: As a dedicated closed-loop controller for servo valves / actuators, it receives commands from the host controller and matches position feedback to achieve high-precision, fast-response positioning of the actuator over 0–100% stroke.
Command Input: Supports DeviceNet fieldbus or 4–20 mA analog signals, with configurable primary-standby redundancy and automatic bumpless transfer.
Feedback Compatibility: Supports single / dual redundant LVDT / RVDT AC feedback, 4–20 mA DC feedback, and 0–12 Vdc voltage feedback, compatible with mainstream position sensors.
Control Algorithms: Built-in multiple control algorithms including Proportional (P), Proportional-Integral (PI), PI + Lag, and PI + Lead-Lag, suitable for proportional and integral actuators.
Protection & Diagnostics: Integrated full-range monitoring and protection against overcurrent, open circuit, short circuit, position deviation, communication failure, and power supply anomalies, supporting two-level responses of alarm / shutdown.
Commissioning Tool: Equipped with the SPC Service Tool PC software for parameter configuration, stroke calibration, dynamic commissioning, status monitoring, and troubleshooting.
Key Electrical & Performance Parameters
1. Power Supply & Drive
Power Supply: 18–32 Vdc (nominal 24 Vdc), maximum continuous current 1.1 A, typical power consumption 20 W.
Actuator Drive: Five software-configurable ranges: ±10 / ±25 / ±50 / ±100 / ±250 mA, 11-bit resolution, 0.2% FS linearity. Supports 0–10% dither current at 25 Hz to suppress hysteresis.
Analog Interface: Command / feedback 4–20 mA, operating range 2–22 mA, fault threshold <1 mA or >23 mA; fixed 4–20 mA position monitor output (0%→4 mA, 100%→20 mA).
Sensor Power: 18 Vdc / 120 mA DC; adjustable 4–10 Vrms AC excitation at 1–5 kHz, suitable for LVDT / RVDT.
2. Control Accuracy
System Accuracy: ±0.25% FS (at 25 ℃). Temperature drift: <150 ppm/℃ in bus mode, <300 ppm/℃ in analog mode.
Response Characteristics: Command filtering 3–10 ms, drive output delay 6 ms, enabling fast and stable positioning.
3. Environmental & Physical
Operating Temperature: −40 ~ +70 ℃, humidity 95% non-condensing. Vibration resistance: 0.7 g (5–2000 Hz); shock resistance: 30 g, 11 ms.
Protection: Must be installed in an enclosure with IP54 or higher protection rating, complying with installation requirements for hazardous explosive areas.

Control Modes & Algorithm Adaptability
Proportional Control: For proportional actuators, with command fine-tuning to eliminate steady-state position error.P Control: Simplest structure, best stability, suitable for systems insensitive to position error.PI Control: Used in over 90% of mainstream applications, zero steady-state error, adaptive to minor system variations.PI + Lag: Suppresses overshoot, suitable for critical process loops where overshoot is strictly prohibited.PI + Lead-Lag: Optimizes system bandwidth and response speed, custom-matched to actuator dynamic characteristics.
Interface & Wiring Design
Terminals: Spring-type screwless terminals, suitable for 0.08–4 mm² (26–12 AWG) cables, enabling convenient and reliable wiring.
Key Terminal Definitions:
- Actuator Drive: ACT DRIVER+ / –
- Position Feedback: DC XDCR IN, LVDT/RVDT 1A/1B, 2A/2B
- Command Input: DEMAND IN (4–20 mA)
- Status Output: ALARM OUT, SHUTDN OUT (relay drive)
- Communication: RS-232 (commissioning), DeviceNet (5-pin connector)
- Power Supply: POWER INPUT+ / – (18–32 Vdc)
Shield Grounding: All signals use shielded twisted-pair cables with single-point grounding to avoid ground loop interference. The enclosure must be connected to protective earth (PE).
Operation & Commissioning Procedure
Hardware Installation: Mount in a ventilated, vibration-resistant, waterproof enclosure. Complete wiring for power, actuator, feedback, command and communication, with reliable grounding.
Software Configuration: Connect via RS-232 using SPC Service Tool, create/import configuration, set control type, command source, feedback type, drive current and alarm thresholds.
Stroke Calibration: Enter calibration mode, set 0%/100% position limits, verify linearity, and save calibration parameters.
Dynamic Tuning: Optimize P/PI parameters in Run mode, adjust dither current to ensure no oscillation, no overshoot and fast tracking.
Fault Reset: Reset latched alarm/shutdown via external contact or software; resume operation after fault elimination.
Typical Application Scenarios
Power Equipment: Servo control for fuel control, inlet valves, bypass valves and governing valves of gas/steam turbines.
Process Industry: High-precision control valves and throttle valve actuator drives in oil & gas, chemical and power sectors.
Marine & Hazardous Areas: Valve position control for ship propulsion, deck machinery, offshore platforms and hazardous Zone 2 areas.
Replacement & Upgrade: Direct replacement for Woodward 8200-224/225 and selected DRFD series drive units, compatible with existing wiring and actuators.
