The GE Multilin UR6TH (also designated UR-6TH) is a digital input/output (Digital I/O) module for the Universal Relay system of GE Multilin brand. Engineered specifically for protection, measurement, control and automation applications in medium and high-voltage power systems, it facilitates the transmission of discrete signals between protective relays, on-site primary equipment and SCADA/DCS systems, serving as a core interface expansion unit in the secondary circuit of power systems.

Adopting the standard backplane bus interface of the UR series, this module supports hot swapping and flexible configuration, and is fully compatible with all universal relays in the GE Multilin UR series. It is widely deployed in power plants, substations, industrial power distribution and other industrial scenarios.

Main Functions and Features

  • Binary Signal Interaction: 8 DI channels collect on-site signals including circuit breaker position, disconnector status and alarm contacts; 4 DO channels output commands for tripping, closing, alarming and interlocking, fully adapting to protection and control circuit demands.
  • High-Speed Response: The output operating time is less than 4ms, satisfying high-speed control timing requirements for line protection and circuit breaker failure protection.
  • Modular & Scalable Design: Serving as an expansion module for universal UR series relays, it allows mixed installation with CPU, CT/VT input modules, power supply modules in a standard 19-inch rack. I/O points can be expanded on demand without overall equipment replacement for system upgrades.
  • Software Configurable: Input and output channel logics including input debounce time, output pulse width and logical interlocking can be configured via GE EnerVista software to adapt to diverse on-site control logics.
  • Status Diagnosis & Indication: Independent LED indicators equipped for each channel to display real-time I/O status, facilitating on-site commissioning and troubleshooting. Channel status can be uploaded to the CPU through the backplane bus for remote monitoring.
  • High Reliability Design: Adopts industrial-grade PCBs and electronic components with electrical isolation between channels. It features strong anti-electromagnetic interference performance to adapt to strong electromagnetic field environments in substations, ensuring long-term stable operation and reducing maintenance costs.

Typical Application Scenarios

  1. Power System Protection: Realizes signal interaction between protective relays, circuit breakers and disconnectors, and outputs tripping/closing commands to complete fault isolation and system recovery.
  2. Alarm & Signal Collection: Connects on-site alarm contacts (transformer gas alarm, high temperature alarm, etc.) and uploads data to SCADA systems for centralized monitoring and alarm management.
  3. Interlock & Control Logic: Executes equipment interlock control via DO outputs (bus interconnection locking, automatic standby power switching, etc.) to improve overall system operational safety.
  4. DCS/SCADA Interface: Acts as a communication interface between UR relays and upper-level systems to realize two-way transmission of binary signals and meet telecontrol requirements for power system automation.

FAQ

  1. What are the differences between UR6TH and other UR series I/O modules (e.g. UR‑6CH)?
UR6TH features an 8DI+4DO (Form‑A, non-monitored) configuration for basic binary signal interaction. UR‑6CH is equipped with 8-channel Form‑C (changeover) outputs with different contact ratings and logical configurations, applicable to scenarios requiring both normally open and normally closed contacts. Model selection shall be determined by actual I/O quantity and contact type requirements.
  2. Does UR6TH support hot swapping?
Yes. The UR series rack allows module hot swapping. The UR6TH can be replaced without powering down the system and will not affect the operation of other modules. It is required to disable relevant control circuits before plugging and unplugging to prevent accidental actions.
  3. How to configure channel logics for UR6TH?
Connect to the UR relay via the official GE EnerVista software and enter the module configuration interface. Adjustable parameters include input debounce time (0–100ms), output operation mode (latching/pulse), pulse width (10ms–10s) and channel logical association. The configuration will take effect after downloading to the relay.
  4. Can the UR6TH input adapt to 220V AC signals?
Yes. The universal input voltage range of 24–250V DC/AC supports direct connection to 220V AC control loop signals without additional conversion modules, matching the voltage level of traditional power secondary circuits.
  5. Can UR6TH output contacts directly drive circuit breaker trip coils?
Direct driving is not recommended. With a maximum contact rating of 250V AC/5A, the module cannot withstand the high current (>5A) of conventional trip coils. An intermediate relay is required for transition to protect module contacts and enhance control stability.
  6. What is the operating temperature range of UR6TH? Is it suitable for outdoor cabinet installation?
The operating temperature ranges from −40℃ to +70℃, which meets the temperature requirements of outdoor cabinets. Outdoor cabinets must be equipped with rainproof, dustproof and ventilation measures to avoid direct sunlight and extreme high temperatures, ensuring long-term stable operation of the module.
