The Woodward 8290-185 is a fully electronic governor of the EPG series developed by Woodward. Designed for gasoline and natural gas engines, it works with Model 524/1724 actuators. Requiring no hydraulic oil or mechanical transmission, it adopts digital PID algorithm to realize precise speed control with a steady-state speed regulation accuracy of ±0.25%. It serves as a core speed control module for small and medium-sized generator sets, marine power systems and industrial drive equipment.

Q: Which actuators are compatible with 8290-185?
A: It only works with Woodward 524 (short-stroke) and 1724 (long-stroke) actuators. Actuators from other brands are not interchangeable.
Q: What is the allowable fluctuation range of supply voltage?
A: Rated voltage is 24VDC with a tolerance of ±10% (21.6–26.4VDC). Operating beyond this range may damage the module.
Q: Can it directly replace model 8290-184?
A: No. Model 8290-185 is designed for gasoline/natural gas engines, while 8290-184 is for diesel engines. They adopt different control algorithms and parameters, and must be matched with the corresponding prime mover.
Q: Is a separate sensor required?
A: A separate magnetoelectric speed sensor (e.g. 82510) needs to be purchased separately. Keep the sensor gap between 0.38–0.51 mm to prevent signal loss.
Q: Indicator lights stay off after power-on?
A: Troubleshooting steps:
  1. Check for reversed power polarity;
  2. Verify if the fuse is blown;
  3. Inspect loose wiring terminals;
  4. Check the module for water ingress and dampness.
Q: Severe speed fluctuation and frequent oscillation occur?
A: Possible causes: excessive gain, insufficient stability or improper sensor gap.
Solutions: Turn the gain potentiometer counterclockwise to reduce gain, turn the stability potentiometer clockwise to improve stability, and recalibrate the sensor gap.
Q: Black smoke appears and speed fails to rise during startup?
A: Excessive start fuel supply. Turn the Start Fuel potentiometer clockwise to reduce fuel delivery at startup, and meanwhile check if the fuel pressure is normal.
Q: Failed Modbus RTU communication connection?
A: Troubleshooting steps:
  1. Confirm matching baud rate and address (default: 9600bps, address 1);
  2. Check if Line A and Line B are reversed;
  3. Ensure the 120Ω terminating resistor is properly installed.
