The Emerson SE4006P2 KJ3241X1-BK1 12P4710X032 Serial Interface Card is specifically designed for the DeltaV S-series Distributed Control System (DCS). Its core function is to enable stable connectivity between the DeltaV system and third-party devices (such as PLCs, analyzers, electronic scales, etc.) that support serial protocols (e.g., Modbus, Allen Bradley’s Data Highway Plus). It also features plug-and-play functionality, extends the service life of existing equipment, and supports redundant configurations. This card is suitable for various industrial applications requiring equipment integration and data interaction. For detailed product information, please refer to the official data sheet 1 released in August 2024.
Product Technical Specifications
1. Hardware Basic Specifications
This interface card consists of 1 serial card and 1 simplex terminal block. The serial card is equipped with 2 serial communication ports, supporting RS232, RS422/485 half-duplex, or RS422/485 full-duplex signals. Each port can be configured independently, with a data transmission rate ranging from 300 baud to 115 KBaud. In addition, each serial interface card supports 32 data sets, and each serial port can handle 16 different data sets. These data set registers can be directly referenced as analog or discrete I/O in the control module to achieve fast data exchange with serial devices.
2. Communication Parameter Configuration
In terms of communication parameters, the baud rate supports multiple options including 300, 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200, 38400, 57600, and 115200; the parity modes include even parity, odd parity, and no parity; the data bits can be set to 7 bits or 8 bits; and the stop bits support 1 bit or 2 bits. Meanwhile, the number of retries can be adjusted between 0 and 255, and both the message timeout period and transmission delay can be set within the range of 100-25500 milliseconds in increments of 100 milliseconds. Staff can also set whether to send output data during interface initialization in DeltaV Explorer.
3. Environmental Adaptability
This interface card has an operating temperature range of -40 to 70°C (-40 to 158°F) and a storage temperature range of -40 to 85°C (-40 to 185°F). It can work normally in an environment with a relative humidity of 5%-95% (non-condensing) and complies with the ISA-S71.04-1985 standard for air contaminants (Grade G3), with an IP rating of IP20²⁹. In terms of shock and vibration resistance, it can withstand a 10g half-sine wave shock (lasting 11 milliseconds), and can endure vibrations of 3mm peak-to-peak at a frequency of 5-13Hz and 0.5g at a frequency of 13-150Hz, making it suitable for various industrial environments.
Supported Protocols and Drivers
This interface card is preloaded with a Modbus software driver and supports Modbus RTU and ASCII communication protocols (in compliance with the Modicon Modbus Protocol Reference Manual PI-MBUS-300 REV D standard released in March 1992). Each serial interface port can be configured as a master device or a slave device. Via the Modbus protocol, it can read input data from Modbus coils, input statuses, holding registers, and discrete input registers, and write output data to coils and holding registers. Output data can be written in single-coil, register mode, or complete data set mode, while input data can be read as a complete data set to achieve optimal performance. In addition, this interface card also supports direct downloading of other serial driver protocols. Customized drivers provided by Emerson include Allen-Bradley Data Highway Plus, Mettler scales, redundancy-enhanced Modbus, Sartorius scales, etc. For information on the availability of customized drivers, please contact the local sales office.
Core Functions and Values
1. Enabling Seamless Information Interaction
This serial interface card integrates all serial information from third-party systems, analyzers, PLCs, and other devices into the DeltaV system. Staff can directly view this data on the operator interface, thereby gaining comprehensive insight into the factory's operating status. When connected to a PLC, the DeltaV software can also transmit monitoring information to the PLC, facilitating cross-system coordinated control strategies and improving overall control efficiency.
2. Plug-and-Play Design for Simplified Operation
The interface card adopts a plug-and-play design, eliminating the need for DIP switch configuration. It only needs to be inserted into any available slot of the controller I/O carrier. The DeltaV controller will automatically detect the interface card and provide configuration options. Combined with online help, staff can complete the configuration through simple click operations, quickly enabling the integrated solution and significantly saving installation and debugging time. Meanwhile, it supports online addition—even when other controller I/Os are powered on and in normal use, the interface card can still be installed without affecting the normal operation of the system.
3. Extending the Service Life of Existing Equipment
For various serial devices (such as PLCs) already installed in the factory, this interface card enables effective connection between the DeltaV system and these devices. There is no need to replace existing equipment to add the advanced process control functions provided by the DeltaV system, which fully utilizes existing equipment resources and reduces equipment update costs.
4. Supporting Redundant Configuration for High Availability
In critical applications with extremely high availability requirements, this interface card can be used as a simplex card to form a redundant pair with another interface card. The system can automatically detect the presence of the redundant terminal block and identify the two interface cards as a redundant pair without additional configuration. When the active serial interface card fails, the system will automatically switch to the standby card without manual intervention. During the switchover process, operators will receive a clear notification on the display interface, ensuring the continuous and stable operation of the system.
