The ICS TRIPLEX T8151B Trusted Communications Interface (CI) is an intelligent communication module compatible with the Trusted triple modular redundant safety control system. Its core function is to independently handle all communication interactions, offloading data exchange workload from the TMR triple redundant processors and preventing mass external data transactions from consuming the main controller’s computing resources.

A single Trusted system supports a maximum of four such modules. All ports allow user-customizable communication parameters, enabling connections to upper-level engineering workstations, third-party instrumentation, and other Trusted control systems. It serves as the core relay unit for internal and external data exchange of the entire safety system.

Part of Rockwell Automation ICS TRIPLEX Trusted product line, this module runs a dedicated Trusted real-time operating system. It relies on a 2-out-of-3 voting mechanism over the triple redundant internal bus to guarantee data transmission integrity, meeting communication requirements for SIL 3 safety-critical applications.

Model Decoding

T8151: First-generation communication interface module with identical functions. It is equipped with dual 10Base2 coaxial ports plus one 10BaseT Ethernet port, and a serial port on the daughterboard. It only supports legacy firmware V2.04 and below, and is being gradually replaced by T8151B.
T8151B Rev B and earlier revisions: Dual 10Base2 coaxial ports + dual 10BaseT Ethernet ports, serial port mounted on the daughterboard, only compatible with legacy chassis backplanes.
T8151B Rev C and later revisions: The 10Base2 coaxial interfaces are removed, upgraded to dual auto-sensing 10/100BaseT Ethernet. The serial port is integrated onto the mainboard, with enhanced processor computing performance and an added system event log backup function. This is the mainstream model currently deployed on site.
Models without additional suffix labels are standard general versions, with no dedicated custom variants for explosion-proof or high-temperature applications.

Product Hardware & Software Specifications

Core Product Advantages

Load Separation Architecture

Communication tasks run on independent computing resources. Main processors only handle safety logic calculations, eliminating logic lag under high-concurrency data exchange conditions.

Triple Modular Redundant Internal Communication Bus

Data exchange between modules and main controllers adopts three-channel redundant voting technology to prevent data distortion caused by single-channel failures.

Fully Isolated Communication Ports

All Ethernet and four serial ports are equipped with galvanic isolation and surge protection, protecting internal circuitry from breakdown due to on-site electromagnetic interference.

Online Parameter Modification Function

System INI configuration files can be edited without system shutdown. Only communication links restart automatically, while the safety logic of controllers keeps running uninterrupted.

Local Data Caching Mechanism

External data reading retrieves local cache stored on the module, significantly cutting data response latency for upper workstations and third-party field devices.

Comprehensive Fault Diagnosis System

Built-in diagnostic serial port and status LED indicators on the front panel enable rapid troubleshooting for broken ports, protocol errors and internal bus faults.

Redundant 24 VDC Backplane Power Supply

Equipped with on-board power conversion circuits plus overvoltage and overcurrent protection. Stable operation is maintained even if one power feed fails.

Local Firmware Upgrade Channel

Firmware can be updated directly via the front-panel diagnostic port without chassis disassembly or full-system downtime.

FAQ

Q1: How to choose between T8151B Rev B and Rev C during procurement?

A1: For new projects, uniformly purchase Rev C and later revisions, which support 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, onboard integrated serial ports and built-in event log backup function. For legacy existing systems with firmware versions below V2.04, hardware of Rev B or earlier must be matched. Direct installation of Rev C will lead to firmware incompatibility and communication outage.

Q2: What is the maximum quantity of T8151B modules per single Trusted system? Are there slot limitations?

A2: The system maximum capacity is 4 modules. They can be installed in all I/O slots of the main controller chassis and expansion chassis. Only modules mounted in the main chassis support peer-to-peer communication; modules on expansion chassis can only connect to third-party external devices.

Q3: The Ethernet LED indicators stay off after T8151B power-up, what is the troubleshooting sequence?

A3:

Check the cable connections at both ends of the T8173 adapter;

Verify correct Ethernet MAC address configuration in the System.INI file;

Read module bus status via diagnostic serial port to confirm no triple redundant backplane bus alarms;

Cross-test with alternative Ethernet ports and adapters to identify hardware defects.

Q4: What extra accessories are required to activate Modbus master function for reading multiple field instruments?

A4: T8122 or T8123 processor interface adapter is mandatory. Complete Modbus master parameter configuration on software side. After inserting the adapter into the corresponding processor slot on hardware, the Modbus master function of the communication module will be enabled.

Q5: Will online modification of module INI communication parameters cause safety controller logic shutdown?

A5: The safety control logic will remain uninterrupted. Only all communication links of this module restart automatically. Communication resumes within 1 to 2 program scan cycles. Old data will be temporarily cached for external read requests, with zero risk of safety interlock interruption.

Q6: Is the module hot-swappable? Does full system configuration re-download required after replacement?

A6: It supports hot-swap in chassis I/O slots without system shutdown. No full-system download is needed after replacing with identical revision hardware; only local communication parameters of the module need synchronization. The triple redundant backplane bus automatically completes data voting and synchronization.

Q7: What functions does the front-panel diagnostic port provide? Which routine maintenance scenarios require its use?

A7: Connect to PC via TC-304-01 cable. It is used for firmware upgrade, communication log capture, bus fault code retrieval, and independent parameter debugging of serial/Ethernet ports. It serves as a core tool for on-site fault diagnosis.
