The ICS TRIPLEX T8151C is a dedicated intelligent Communications Interface module for Rockwell Automation Trusted safety control systems. Its core function is to offload communication processing workload from the TMR triple modular redundant processors, acting as a data transfer hub for interactions among controllers, engineering workstations, third-party field devices and multiple cross-Trusted systems.
A single Trusted system supports up to four T8151C modules. The hardware is factory-equipped with dual 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports and four galvanically isolated serial ports, compatible with a wide range of industrial communication protocols. When matched with supporting accessories, it enables Modbus master operation and Sequence-of-Event (SOE) timestamped event logging. Developed specifically for SIL-rated Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), all communication channels feature galvanic isolation and built-in surge protection to deliver stable, interference-free communication links.

  • 8151: Base hardware designation for communications interface modules
  • C: Third-generation hardware revision, the only compatible communications card for Trusted V4.0 systems

Historical Iteration Differentiation

T8151 (Rev H and earlier): Equipped with dual 10Base2 coaxial ports plus one 10BaseT Ethernet port; serial ports mounted on daughterboard

T8151B (Rev B and older hardware): Retained 10Base2 coaxial interfaces with relatively limited hardware performance

T8151B Rev C: Removed 10Base2 ports, only 10/100 Mbps Ethernet available, without event log backup function

T8151C: Current standard production model; full 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, serial ports integrated on mainboard, built-in event log backup storage, compatible with Trusted Release 4.0

Core Product Advantages

Load Separation Architecture

A standalone PowerPC processor processes all communication messages, preventing massive external read/write operations from consuming computing resources of the TMR controller and ensuring stable scan cycles of safety control logic.

Fully Isolated Multi-channel Hardware

All four serial ports and dual Ethernet ports adopt galvanic isolation with no crosstalk between channels. Its resistance to on-site static electricity and radio frequency interference meets the standards for industrial hazardous area applications.

Integrated Multi-protocol Support

Natively compatible with Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, Trusted peer-to-peer communication and SOE timestamped event transmission. Connection to third-party instruments and PLCs can be realized without additional gateways.

Upgraded Iterative Hardware Design

Successor to legacy T8151 and T8151B models. Obsolete 10Base2 coaxial ports are eliminated; it adopts a single-piece integrated PCB with built-in system event log backup storage. All serial ports are integrated onto the mainboard to remove the need for a daughterboard.

Online Configuration Activation

When editing communication parameters in the system INI file or updating application firmware online, only the module’s communication links restart automatically, with no requirement for full system power cycle.

Comprehensive Fault Diagnosis System

Three layers of diagnostic tools are available: front-panel LED status indicators, front-mounted RS232 diagnostic port and Telnet remote command line. It supports message capture, port traffic statistics and troubleshooting of Modbus link failures.

Redundant Communication Compatibility

Supports redundant networking with multiple modules. Dual CI hot standby can be configured for SOE event collection. Event cache data will be automatically synchronized after link disconnection without loss of chronological sequence data.

FAQ

Q1: Can T8151C directly replace T8151B? Is configuration modification required?

A1: The two modules share compatible chassis slots and support plug-and-fit installation. However, Trusted V4.0 systems only recognize T8151C; the legacy firmware of T8151B is incompatible with new systems. Full system configuration download is mandatory after replacement, while parameters for SOE cache capacity remain unchanged.

Q2: Can T8151C operate as a Modbus master without the T8122 adapter?

A2: No. The Modbus master function relies on T8122/T8123 hardware to acquire bus access privileges. If only T8151C is installed, it can only run as a Modbus slave. Although master configuration files can be downloaded successfully, no message transmission or reception will take place.

Q3: What is the maximum number of Modbus RTU slave devices supported by a single T8151C?

A3: One module supports up to 16 Modbus master channels. All masters combined can connect to a maximum of 64 slave devices, with a total of no more than 400 read/write messages. Exceeding this limit will extend communication cycles and trigger response timeouts.

Q4: Does T8151C support hot swapping? What is the replacement procedure for faulty units?

A4: Hot swapping is not supported. The 24 VDC chassis power supply must be cut off before removal or insertion. After powering on the new module, it automatically synchronizes all communication configurations from the main processor; no reconfiguration of ports or Modbus parameters is needed.

Q5: What system parameters need modification when configuring two T8151C modules for SOE redundancy?

A5:
  1. Deselect the "auto-protect network variables" option in processor configuration;
  2. Set identical SOE base addresses and block quantities for both CI modules;
  3. Define 4 synchronization registers in the variable dictionary, occupying the first 4 addresses of the SOE window.

Q6: Can both Ethernet ports be connected to the same network segment?

A6: Not recommended. The official manual requires TCP/IP0 and TCP/IP1 to be assigned separate subnets. If connected to the same segment, only one port will transmit and receive data normally while the other loses link connectivity. Separate subnets are mandatory for redundant communication design.

Q7: How to troubleshoot frequent packet loss of RS485 multi-drop field devices?

A7:
  1. Switch the serial port mode to rs485fdmux multi-drop mode;
  2. Install 120Ω terminating resistors at both ends of the bus;
  3. Increase the minimum message interval (ms) in Modbus slave configuration;
  4. Check UART port error counters via the diagnostic serial port to locate short-circuit faults on wiring.

Q8: What troubleshooting steps apply when the module Health red LED flashes?

A8:
  1. Verify the dual redundant 24 VDC chassis supply voltage stays within 20~32 V;
  2. Run the command v in command line to check whether the firmware version matches the system;
  3. Clear event logs and restart the module;
  4. Replace the module if backplane pins are bent or internal hardware chip damage exists.
