The ICS TRIPLEX T8123 is a Trusted TMR Processor Interface Adapter within Rockwell Automation triple modular redundant safety control system, belonging to the T812X series. It is compatible with two TMR controller racks: T8110B and T8111. Mounted directly on the rear of the controller rack, it acts as a data exchange bridge between the TMR processors and external third-party devices.

The module integrates multiple RS422/485 serial communication interfaces, dual IRIG-B clock synchronization interfaces, system fault relay contacts and power supply monitoring terminals. Meanwhile, it unlocks two core extended capabilities: IRIG-B standard time synchronization decoding and Modbus master communication. It also supports dual enhanced Peer-to-Peer cross-chassis data interaction. As a core supporting interface unit for Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), it realizes unified time sequencing, networking of third-party equipment and external transmission of system fault signals. The overall power consumption is only 0.1W, enabling stable operation in industrial sites ranging from 0℃ to 60℃.

Model Breakdown

The T812X represents the complete product series. The four-digit suffix differentiates functional configurations, with clear functional demarcation for each model:
  • T8120: Base model, only equipped with serial ports and auxiliary terminal blocks; no IRIG-B or Modbus Master functions.
  • T8121: Supports only IRIG-B002/122 clock synchronization; Modbus Master capability is not available.
  • T8122: Activates only Modbus Master communication; lacks decoding capability for clock synchronization interfaces.
  • T8123: Full-function variant integrated with both IRIG-B time synchronization and Modbus Master extended functions, serving as the top-tier model of the series.
Supplement: The original first-generation T8123 has been phased out of circulation. Its replacement model is T8123C, which features fully compatible hardware pinouts and functions for direct drop-in replacement in Rockwell Automation Trusted systems.

Technical Features

  • Rack direct-plug mounting design without extra adapter base. Equipped with latch release buttons for easy installation and removal.
  • Three independent isolated RS422/485 buses: Port 1 is fixed 2-wire mode; Port 2 and Port 3 support free switching between 2-wire / 4-wire modes, compatible with multi-drop bus topology.
  • Dual independent IRIG-B input terminals: J5 for IRIG-B122 amplitude-modulated signals; J13 for IRIG-B002 pulse-width modulation time synchronization signals. On-board 120Ω terminating resistor jumper LK4.
  • Four fault / shutdown relay contacts: J2/J17 correspond to the active processor; J3/J15 correspond to the standby processor, providing three sets of passive contacts: normally open, normally closed and common.
  • J6 power supply monitoring terminals collect shutdown pre-alarm signals from dual 24V power supplies. No active output; only passive contact access is supported.
  • Port1 independent diagnostic serial port J7/J12, used for local controller debugging, program upload and download.
  • 50V reinforced insulation isolation between all interfaces and chassis ground, PCB design with electrostatic protection. All interfaces adopt Phoenix 2.5mm pitch pluggable terminals.
  • Natively hardware-supported dual enhanced Peer-to-Peer high-speed data exchange across different Trusted systems; no additional software license required.
  • Metal housing for full shielding with equipotential bonding points, complying with industrial ESD and radio frequency interference protection specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Can T8123 and T8123C be directly interchanged?
A1: The original first-generation T8123 has been discontinued. T8123C serves as a direct replacement model with identical hardware pinouts, interface definitions and full functions. No modifications to rack mounting or program configuration are required for direct drop-in replacement.
Q2: Can T8123 activate Modbus Master without T815X modules?
A2: No. T8123 only enables the Modbus Master function license. The T815X series acts as the physical hardware carrier for Modbus Master communication. Without this unit, only Modbus Slave mode is available.
Q3: How to resolve clock offset when multiple modules are cascaded on IRIG-B ports?
A3: Keep the LK4 termination jumper installed only on the last T8123 on the bus link and remove all others. Use shielded twisted pair or coaxial cables, and shorten the transmission distance from the clock source to the first module.
Q4: What causes no signal output from fault relay contacts?
A4: Verify whether the processor system health indicator flashes red (FAULT triggered) or the processor enters shutdown status (FAIL triggered). Check if NC/COM terminals are wired reversely. The contacts only provide status change without voltage output; an external passive acquisition circuit is required.
Q5: How to distinguish T8120/1/2/3 during procurement to avoid wrong model selection?
A5: Match functions according to project requirements: select the suffix -1 if time synchronization is required; select the suffix -2 for Modbus Master. Choose T8123 if both functions are needed. Select T8120 for basic serial port expansion only.
Q6: How to troubleshoot frequent packet loss on RS485 multi-drop bus communication?
A6: Confirm the termination jumper is fitted only on the end device; ensure signal lines A and B are not crossed, and the shield is grounded at a single end. Keep the total bus length within specification limits and reduce communication baud rate for stability testing.
Q7: No serial communication after module installation. Which points of the SK1 connector should be inspected?
A7: Confirm the module is fully latched onto the rack backplane. Check that the 48-pin contacts of SK1 are free of bending and oxidation. Verify normal power supply on the processor backplane and test terminal continuity by replacing corresponding serial jumpers.
Q8: What mandatory requirements apply when installing or removing T8123 in hazardous explosive areas?
A8: Do not insert or extract the module while the circuit is live. Confirm zero flammable gas concentration in the working area. The module PCB contains electrostatic-sensitive components; wear an anti-static wristband throughout operations.
